I chose four characters with the grass radical (艹) representing flowers: 菊 (chrysanthemum), 蓮 (lotus), 芙 (hibiscus), and 茉 (jasmine). To maintain a consistent series, I used an ancient window motif as the border. The background inside the border also features the same flower as the character, employing a visual repetition technique to fill the space. These flowers are rendered as polygonal and symmetrical shapes, giving a dignified and orderly aesthetic.
To highlight the uniqueness of each character, I added distinctive internal elements:
- 菊 (chrysanthemum): Reflecting the flower's gentle nature, the pattern depicts a large chrysanthemum surrounded by clouds, conveying a sense of slowness and tranquility.
- 蓮 (lotus): This design evokes images of lotus ponds under the moon, drawing on classical poetic imagery. A large lotus flower echoes the form of the moon within the composition.
- 芙 (hibiscus): While "芙" historically refers to the lotus or water lily, I combined the modern hibiscus with water elements to symbolize a lotus emerging from water—a bridge between ancient and contemporary interpretations.
- 茉 (jasmine): Inspired by the famous song Jasmine Flower, with lyrics like "Fragrant and beautiful branches, white and fragrant, praised by everyone," I integrated elements of fragrance into the design to convey the flower’s distinctive scent.
Finally, the large floral motif in each pattern corresponds with the smaller flowers in the background, ensuring that every detail is interconnected and meaningful.
